Manuscript on paper, in several hands, containing three collections of Court of Session decisions and related legal material. The cases were originally gathered by three sixteenth-century Lords of Session as guides to precedent, and many have marginal annotations. These are followed by a "Prefect Inventar of all the pious donationes Since the dayes of King James the first to the raigne of King James the 6th." There is an alphabetical subject index to the law cases at the end of the volume.

Maitland was one of fourteen judges who sat on the Court of Session, the supreme civil court of Scotland, established in 1532. A distinguished lawyer and poet, Maitland was nominated to the court in 1561. In 1562, he was made keeper of the great seal.
